Shane Edward Grogg is an award-winning poster designer and airbrush artist here in San Francisco and has been "on the Bus" for over 20 years, since his very first Grateful Dead show on 9/03/88 in Washington,DC. Two years later he relocated to California-first in Venice Beach and then migrating north to the Bay Area  He began airbrushing upon arrival ,inspired by  murals in both Venice, and then in the Mission district here in SF.

He began a three year run of winning the Haight Ashbury Street Fair poster from 1994-1996, and again in 2000. He was also lead artist for the Haight-Ashbury Free Press and hand-painted many colorful sidewalk signs for stores and shops in The Haight, as well as official tour shirts for The Grateful Dead's 1994 Vegas shows.

In 1997 he won first place in the "retro" category in The Bay Guardian's "Summer of Love" 30th anniversary poster contest, which was judged by the legendary Stanley Mouse,an early and favorite inspiration.

In 1999 he became art director for Tower Records and Video in the Castro, creating dozens of large airbrushed displays for upcoming CDs, DVDs, and celebrity in-store appearances for such artists as Renee Fleming, Andre Previn, Nancy Sinatra and Sandra Bernhard.

In 2000 he landed his "dream job" of being a full-time airbrush artist for the legendary W.E.T. Studios of San Francisco and rock artist George Mead, producing large-scale display boards and hand painted versions of album cover art, famously featured at the Tower Records in North Beach and other record stores all over the Bay Area. He also worked on many large-scale backdrops, murals and stage art for such acts as N'Synch, Santana, Further Festival and Phil Lesh and Friends...and the Dalai Lama's 2001 Shoreline appearance.

In 2001 he began a six-year run of designing and building the award-winning parade floats for Gold's Gym, and has created dozens of full-scale floats, props and scenery and volunteered his services to such contingents as AAA, Balloon Magic, Barely Legal, and P.A.W.S..

He returned to full-time airbrushing in 2007 painting dynamic T-shirts , leather jackets and traditional canvases for The Ave in Oakland and many private commisions while also launching his own website and studio under the name of S.E.G. Airbrush , creating custom painted shirts for clients around the world.

In January of 2009 he added computer graphics to his work, and began morphing images of his airbrushed shirts w/ digital fonts and colors creating posters, flyers, logos and web page designs. He also works with Another Planet Entertainment, decorating backstage areas, dressing rooms and VIP lounges for concerts at The Greek Theatre as well as the Outside Lands Music Festival.

Shane's style is highly influenced by rock and roll poster art and the classic vinyl album covers of his youth, the comic-book and superhero genres as well as traditional photo-realism. He particulary loves painting portraits, esp of those musical and pop-culture icons that  play a large role in his life's journey...and chief among these is his love for the music and legacy of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead.. He is very proud and honored to have been given the chance to contribute the poster art for the Jerry Day celebration here in SF for 2009-2011.

He divides his time between honing his computer design skills and airbrushing in his Bernal Heights studio in a home he shares w/ his beloved dog Samson, as well as part-time work at Golds Gym as retail manager. When he's not working, he enjoys live music, movies, meditation, traveling and adventures, politics,  and spending quality time w/ his friends and family. He also has donated artwork ,contributions, and volunteer work to  The Rex Foundation and SF SPCA.

He hopes to continue to refine his computer and web-design skills, design many new rock posters and is planning the next stage of his airbrush evolution by entering the world of custom car and motorcycle painting, and dreams of spending his days airbrushing surfboards on the boardwalks of Southern California or on a quiet beachside in Hawaii, although he admits he could easily spend the rest of his life driving all over the countryin a VW bus covered w/ stickers, filled w/ friends and dogs with open windows and great tunes.
